Joe Baird

Founder

Before I get into my career and the experiences that have shaped my views. Let me tell you where my greatest passion lies, my family.

I am married to Anna, my beautiful bride of 23 years. She is without a doubt my best friend and greatest advocate. Early in our marriage, she gave up her career as a chemical engineer to stay home with our children. She has graciously ridden the roller coaster which has been my career. Without her support and encouragement, there is no way I would be where I am today.

Together we have six wonderful boys. They are truly a blessing from the Lord, as they are a daily testament to learning to live a sacrificial life.

My 23-year technology career is broken up into four phases:

I graduated from Texas A&M in 1996 and began my career, specifically in the field of IT Consulting. IT Consulting was great. It afforded me the opportunity to see a number of different environments- the good and the bad. The last seven years of my IT consulting career were spent co-founding and growing a new company with my partners. This was a great learning experience for my next career phase, Technology Start-ups.

IT Consulting

Through an unusual set of circumstances, I was thrust into taking over a struggling cloud voice and video conferencing startup.

It was four years of exciting times (that is code for high stress). We raised two rounds of funding and built a global cloud voice and video conferencing platform for portable conferencing devices. However, the venture turned out unsuccessful due to a number of obstacles.

Next, I took over a four-month-old ISV startup focused on WebRTC and Video Conferencing technology. We focused the company on building and integrating voice and video communications into existing telecommunication and conferencing platforms. After a very successful first year, the company was acquired by BroadSoft, the global leader in cloud communications.

After the acquisition by BroadSoft (now Cisco Systems), I joined as the VP of Cloud Video, charged with building a cloud-based video conferencing platform. After six months, I convinced the founders, based on my previous experience, that this was not a good business model for them to pursue. Yes, that was awkward!
After almost talking myself and the team out of a job, I asked my boss, the CTO, to create an internal innovation team. He liked the idea and charged me with building a team to develop new ideas to compliment BroadSoft’s products and services.

I took on the title of VP of BroadSoft Labs. My team and I spent the next four years building a myriad of proof-of-concepts and products around WebRTC, contextual intelligence, NLP, transcription, personal assistants, cloud APIs, and other bleeding edge technologies.

In 2016, we had an idea come out of the lab that the executive team and customers especially loved. This idea became BroadSoft Hub. Hub is a cloud service that allows the integration of 3rd party cloud services into BroadSoft’s Unified Communication clients and services to provide contextual intelligence to business communications. Today, this is what really differentiates BroadSoft’s UC products and services from its competitors.
Its popularity and demand created a problem. There was no internal team with the knowledge and experience to hand the service off to, so I was asked to take on a second role (VP of BroadSoft Hub) and launch the service.
Over the next year, I grew my team and successfully launched a global service utilizing the Google Cloud.

My passion for InnoGapp came from a series of talks I began to give in 2015 at BroadSoft’s global customer summits. Although I had given numerous technical talks for BroadSoft, this was the first talk where I began to discuss the “how” of innovation and the culture that drove my team.

Over the series of talks, I experienced something I had never experienced before, impassioned personal sidebars. I continued to hear things like, “I wish my boss was here to hear that” and “I wish we could implement that”.

I realized this topic really struck a chord with people. So, over the subsequent years, I began a journey to understand the topic better to grow myself and my team’s performance. My passion for driving innovation and my love for software are the key elements for why I founded InnoGapp.
